"Know Thyself"
- Famous Delphic Maxim
“Know Thyself” is the most famous ancient delphic maxims inscribed upon the Temple of Apollo in ancient Greece.
It has been quoted and analyzed by numerous authors throughout history, and has been applied in many ways.
The earliest interpretations of the phrase were ‘know your limits’ (knowing the extent of one’s abilities),
‘know your place in the social scale’, and ‘knowing oneself to be mortal’.
However, Plato's reinterpretation focused on 'knowing your soul' (self-awareness), rather on - 'Who am I'.
Dr. Tasha Eurich, an organizational psychologist and her team of researchers, discovered that while 95% of people claim to be self-aware, research shows that only 10-15% of people actually fit the criteria for self-awareness.
"Am I the One?"
In the movie ‘The Matrix’, Morpheus takes the protagonist Neo to the Oracle to reveal the prophecy. While Morpheus ‘believes’ Neo is the ‘One’ who can save the humans from Artificial Intelligence (AI), Neo is still disillusioned and is unsure of what is real and what isn’t. When asked whether he thinks he is the ‘One’, Neo says he doesn’t know. The Oracle draws his attention to a signboard that says ‘TEMET NOSCE’, which means ‘Know Thyself’ in Latin.
"To make something special, you have to..."
In the movie ‘Kung Fu Panda’, Po (the Panda) is chosen to be the dragon warrior, destined to save the valley from evil. Not even Master Shifu (Po’s master) believes that Po was the right choice for the dragon warrior. Despite his love for Kung Fu, Po is unsure if he is capable of understanding the secret hidden message (it says nothing) of the dragon scroll to save the valley. But after a brief encounter with his father, Po understands that there are ‘no secrets’. To make something special, you have to ‘believe’ that it is special!
We are all a lot like NEO and PO!
At times, others believe in our abilities, but we are not sure
We've all been in situations where either family, friends, team mates, or society believes or expects us to be, act, do certain things or in certain ways, but we feel stressed, and are unsure of whether we are capable or truly invested in the task.
While at times, we feel capable, but others do not believe in us
We've also been in situations where we feel ready, capable, excited, motivated about something, but we face resistance or lack of faith, trust, belief from those around us, leading to lack of motivation.
And sometimes, we are uncertain of reason and direction
And we also face situations in life where we don't know what to do, where to go, how to approach situations, and why choose certain things over others. The uncertainty and directionless-ness can be crippling.
